Biography
Stephen Spurgin, M.D., is a Pediatric Cardiologist at Children’s HealthSM and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He has a special interest in heterotaxy syndrome, single ventricle repair and pulmonary arteriovenous malformations.
“Pediatric cardiology is an inherently collaborative effort between a vast number of fields of knowledge and clinical care,” Dr. Spurgin says. “I love working with our amazing teams to conquer complex diseases. The long-term relationships formed with patients and families are so meaningful to me.”
Dr. Spurgin earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He then completed a residency in pediatrics at UT Southwestern - Children's Medical Center and a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He is a physician scientist and is a graduate of the NIH-funded Pediatric Scientist Development Program.
He is actively involved in research aiming to improve diagnostics, treatments and care for children with heart conditions.
“As a physician-scientist, I hope to use the amazing tools of laboratory investigation to investigate clinical problems and find new solutions to chronic diseases,” he says.
Outside of work, Dr. Spurgin enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, reading science fiction novels, attempting woodworking projects and cheering on the Dallas Mavericks.
