Biography
In the technologically sophisticated environment of pediatric intensive care, pediatric critical care specialists like Dr. Darryl Miles leverage a great deal of patience with specialized experience to make a difference at the bedside. They are crucial players in the collaborative effort to stabilize, diagnose and manage children with life-threatening conditions.
Dr. Miles is focused on improving neurologic outcomes in pediatric patients following brain injuries and reducing neurologic complications of critical illness.
“I am inspired by the challenge of maximizing outcome potential in children that come in with an acute neurologic injury and improving their chances of recovery, as well as their long-term neurodevelopmental improvement,” he says.
Most critically ill or injured children have complex issues related to or in conjunction with their life-threatening neurologic condition. Dr. Miles, who is part of the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Research Group, is focused on improving the care of these patients through investigative research and a multidisciplinary team approach.
“I am always looking for ways that we can improve the critical care management of patients and follow their recovery beyond the ICU,” he says.
Dr. Miles is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in pediatric critical care medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of California at San Francisco, where he also completed an internship and residency in pediatrics. He completed a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at UT Southwestern.
He has participated in several NIH-sponsored multi-center clinical trials for therapies using systemic hypothermia to improve cognitive outcome after brain injury in children. In addition, he has also developed institutional practice guidelines for severe traumatic brain injury, status epilepticus and targeted temperature management. He is an assistant professor of pediatric critical care at UT Southwestern with research interests in traumatic brain injury in children.
Outside of his practice, Dr. Miles enjoys outdoor sports, particularly mountain and road biking.
